Board of Elections
Mission:
The Otsego County Board of Election administers the Election Law in a fair and nonpartisan manner to enable every voter who is qualified and desires to vote, be given the opportunity to vote.
Vision:
We provide the best quality and most accurate information regarding Election Law, Voting, Registering to Vote, and Running for office, in a prompt, courteous and most cost effective way for the Citizens of Otsego County.
The Board of Elections is a bi-partisan office that acts in a nonpartisan fashion. The Board is charged with the weighty responsibility of being sure that every potential voter is given the opportunity to vote. The Otsego County Board attempts to serve the public by answering election and voter registration related questions. We at the Otsego County Board work with Federal, New York State, other Counties, Otsego County and local officials on a variety of elections and registration issues. The election law is complicated and it is important for us to try to be well versed and practiced in our understanding of the ever changing Election Laws.
Some of our major responsibilities include:
- Sending out, receiving and processing registration forms
- Accepting and processing absentee and military ballot information
- Working with State, County and local officials to create the election
- Instructing election inspectors
- Answering election and registration-related questions
- Canceling the registrations of people who have died or moved out of the county
- Creating enrollment lists and computer disks for candidates and others
- Re-canvass the votes after each election
- Certification of the results of each election to State Board of Elections
- Working with many other State and Federal agencies and programs like ADA
- Ensuring that all Post Offices are supplied with registration forms
- Sending registration forms to all Participation in Government instructors
- Setting of voting machines for each election district
Other Miscellaneous information:
There are about 34,193 registered voters in 57 election districts in Otsego County.
It is mandated that there be equal number of Republicans and Democrats in the Board of Elections.
Each party has a part-time Commissioner, a full-time Deputy Commissioner, an Elections Specialist and a Machine Technician/Elections Specialist.
